Wombat, Voltaire Break Million Messages Per Second

Low latency datafeed/middleware specialist Wombat Financial Software has released it’s latest platform, dubbed Wombat Data Fabric, leveraging Infiniband technology from Voltaire. The new offering can sustain more than one million 200-byte messages per second over a Voltaire switch in less than 100 microseconds using commodity hardware.

  1. Ken Barnes Says:

Thanks as always for the mention of Wombat, A-Team.

Wombat is currently sharing information about this new innovation (Wombat Data Fabric) with our customers in private sessions, though we expect to more publicly share the story in the coming months.

Suffice to say though that this is a software-only solution to address the capacity problem plaguing the capital markets, and one we are tremendously enthused about. Wombat has deliberately avoided the “appliance” approach many others are taking because of the many risks and costs associated with home grown hardware. The investment in the x86 server vendor supply chain and the tools and processes to support their installations is enormous and should only be abandoned as a last resort. And while there’s no question that last resort of hardware acceleration seemed to be the only way out for some time, we’ve found a better way forward.

In the past year plus our R&D team, working intimately with partners and customers, identified a software based solution that would offer the CPU consumption reduction, order of magnitude messaging capacity increase, and yes significant latency reduction (with minimal low latency volatility) the street has been looking for. That’s what Wombat Data Fabric is. Best of all the thousands of customer applications that run on our MAMA API today across the capital markets in the Americas, Europe and Asia will all work out of the box with the Fabric (though many of course will need to upgrade to our latest rev, 4.0.) So you can port over from MAMA4 on RV to MAMA4 on Wombat Data Fabric, say, without changing a line of code, just a config file. And from day 1 you’ll have access to any of the more than 100 Wombat feed handlers you may have already installed, to our SuperBook orderbook aggregation server, to our legacy bridges connecting you to older market data platforms, etc. Pardon the trite expression but this is really an evolution-based way forward, not revolution/rip and replace, and one that preserves the massive investments (people, processes, software…) the street has made in Wombat’s platform to date.

We have a fully booked, paid pilot program at this point, but are laying the groundwork for further installations post product launch later this year. I welcome an email from anyone looking to find out more about the secret sauce inside the Fabric or general dialogue or debate on the promise and hazards of hardware based approaches.

    Best regards,
    Ken Barnes
